Paper Towel Experiment

Way back on May 28th, I decided to do a little experiment. We had been out of paper towels for several days and I decided to see how long it would take someone to change the roll.

**I feel it is very important to add that I have an awesome hubby who always cleans anything, anytime I ask. I’ve known for over 10 years he is not a very observant person. This experiment was for 100% fun…not out of spite**

9 days later someone definitely gave the roll a spin, but clearly did not change it.

2 days after that, someone tore a tiny little piece off the roll, but didn’t change it. By this point, I decided my family must be convinced we were simply out of paper towels.

The next day, my hubby changed the roll BUT didn’t throw the empty roll away!!! So a new experiment was started to see how long the empty roll would sit on the counter.

After over a week of the roll on the counter, I was going crazy!! Pretty sure my hubby was convinced I must be saving the roll for something. It’s not that unusual for me to be saving large quantities of random things for kid projects at church.

I devised a plan though! My hubby is not always the most observant, but he will always help me anytime I ask. On the evening of June 16th, I decided to ask him to wipe the counters off after dinner. Surely he would notice the roll and at least ask about it…right??

As you can see in the video below, I ask him to wipe off 2 counters. Without any hesitation he gets started. However, he only wipes off one counter! Not the paper towel counter!! (Bonus points for doing the sink though)

I try to play cool….but I’m not a very sneaky person. I notice he only cleaned one counter and point it out to him. This is totally abnormal for me, I never point things like that out to him but I want that towel roll gone! But since my hubby is so awesome, he goes right on cleaning the counters and even does an extra one.

The moment the paper towel roll is thrown away 🙂

Later that evening, I walked into the kitchen and let out a scream! The paper towel roll had been resurrected from the trashcan!! Pretty sure my hubby is going to keep making it reappear over the next few days…weeks….years?

I’ve asked my hubby if he noticed the paper towel hadn’t been changed. He says he did notice, but since he didn’t need a paper towel that entire time he didn’t see the need to change it. He did admit he never noticed the roll on the counter 🙂

So how were we able to go 2 weeks without paper towels? Well, I guess we’re getting better at using rags and cloths! Read more about the steps we are taking to create less waste in my post How to Save Green by Going Green.
